What is The Helpful Clinic’s Ethos?
We believe that health is a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
The World Health Organisation agrees.
Staying healthy can be a challenging journey. Easing difficult symptoms and succeeding in stressful situations can get in the way of performing our purpose.
If we are to get to be where we want to be, living our lives in a way that’s actually and actively helpful to our health and wellbeing is vital.
This is at the heart of everything we do.
The Helpful Mission
To improve health and wellbeing through increased health and emotional literacy.
We believe that everyone can do something to improve their health and their feelings. So, through our work, whether that’s First Aid for Feelings, working with individuals in terms of their health or wellbeing or working with companies to support their people, the mission is always at the centre of what we do.
Put simply, The Helpful Mission is based on the belief that you can affect your health and wellbeing by learning and practising the skills of health and emotional literacy and not that your health and wellbeing is down to innate talent or sheer luck.
The Helpful Sustainability Pledge
The Helpful Clinic (THC) commits to the circular economy and sets itself the following sustainability goals:
- THC uses local suppliers where possible to help the environment and support the local economy. For instance, we commission local designers and catering providers
- THC sources, where possible, paper stock that is at least FSC certified and where possible 100% post-consumer recycled paper with FSC recycled and EU eco label certifications
- THC sources, to the best of our ability, materials that are considerate to the environment. When that’s not possible we seek to offset any negative environmental impact
- THC collaborates with, contributes to and promotes social ventures. For example, we choose to run our business in the Future Business Centre, a purpose-built environmentally sustainable building for businesses with a social purpose.
Want to learn more about our ethos?
Because we want to become better practitioners and better people, we constantly explore our ethos, methods and worldview. As such, we often blog about our discoveries.
Here are a few blogs to help you understand more about the ideas underpinning our work.
A letter from the founder: Thor A Rain established The Helpful Clinic in response to their own personal experience with chronic illness. Read more on our blog.
Our Compass: Inspired by their Icelandic seafaring roots, Thor has developed a ‘compass’ that guides how The Helpful Clinic works.
Why are we a social venture? We commit to provide an ethical, sustainable, affordable service. A social venture structure binds us to this mission. We recognise the commitment you are making and want you to feel reassured that if this doesn’t work for you, we will refund your fee in full.
